We have recently learned of several coaches who ‘follow’ children as young as 11 on Instagram and allow them to ‘follow’ them back. This is in breach of our social media policy and very bad practice – creating opportunities for abuse and leaving coaches open to accusations. Don’t forget, most social media apps do not allow under-13s.
Also, adults in netball should not:
>> Communicate 1:1 with under 18s. >> Use social media to put pressure on players to practice at home or send videos of them doing drills. This can exclude players who are not on social media, create bias in selection decisions and promote unsafe use of online platforms. >>Share offensive, sexual, abusive or threatening messages or material.

Several clubs have recently suspended or excluded junior players in response to difficult parent behaviour. England Netball recommend instead that, if possible, the parents’ behaviour should be addressed without affecting the child. For example, using Codes of Conduct and disciplinary process appropriately, advice, followed by a warning, then a sanction on the parent (such as a 3-match ban from the sidelines, or removal from a club chat group) is better than depriving a child of their netball. |
