Dear Safeguarding Officers, Club Chairs, and Club Secretaries,
How is it December already? We hope you are looking forward to some well-deserved relaxation during the upcoming festive break. 🎄
As always, please think about sharing some of the information below with players, parents and carers in your club. 📩

Many of you have been emailed about this, however, here are the essential requirements that must be implemented in all netball clubs:
- A Club Safeguarding Officer (CSO) – yes all clubs, even adult only. The CSO should be assigned on ENgage (To edit roles, click on your club profile, select the role you want to edit in the right-hand column – then click Edit (top right), then search for the person you want to assign, then Save (top right)).
- A CSO must have at least an EN Social & Supporting membership.
- If your club has members aged under 18, the CSO must have a DBS check carried out through EN – instructions here.

In late 2023, England Netball launched a safeguarding investigation into a coach accused of abusive and bullying behaviour towards young players.
Reports described the coach shouting inappropriate and abusive words at players and forcing them to repeat missed shots until they scored.
Although the club believed the coach was effective in achieving results, many children faced emotional harm due to this treatment. Consequently, the coach received a one-year ban from coaching children, followed by a year of supervision and mandatory safeguarding training.

What does this mean for other clubs?

Coaches should lead by serving their players. A supportive environment fosters happy athletes who perform their best. Consider the following:
- How do your coaches help players reach their potential?
- Is the environment kind and supportive, celebrating successes and forgiving mistakes?
- Do team members think of "our coach" or does the coach refer to "my team"?
- Is exercise used as punishment? (It shouldn't be.)
- Focus on facilitating, encouraging, and empowering rather than dominating.
